Massachusetts
Massachusetts has Five Principles to guide their Personalized Learning strategies. These five principles support the goal of equity and excellence for every student. The five principle include: Competency-based Learning, Authentic Learning, Flexible Learning, Student Driven Learning, and Dispositions for Learning. Outside of the principles for PL, Massachusetts has a focus on the social and emotional well being of the students.
Competency-based Learning
* broad targets for learners that allow them to receive credit when they show mastery for each new unit
Authentic Learning
* Learners work on standards-aligned, project-, and community-based learning, with multiple opportunities to demonstrate what they know and are assessed using high quality products
Flexible Learning
* the environment and time for learning is flexible, not a "one size fits all" approach to learning
Student Driven Learning
* learners have a voice and choice in their learning. Learners help create personal profiles that are used to develop personal learning plans
Dispositions for Learning
* learners develop skills and habits that prepare them for success academically, and post graduate life in a global economy.
