My Viewpoint of Personalized Learning
After studying several states that have formalized structures for their Personalized Learning plans throughout their states, I have developed a better understanding of the definition of Personalized Learning.
Personalized Learning is a diverse variety of learning experiences, academic supports, and instructional methods, that are all tied to individual learning plans of each student. These plans are directed at individual learning strengths, needs, and interest of individual students.
Personalized Learning is an alternative to the "one size fits all" approach to education. The goal of Personalized Learning is to make individual learning needs the focus, by determining the learning strengths and needs of each student, and then providing customized learning plans and paths for each student. To make this happen, schools, teachers, learning coaches, and all other stakeholders will use a wide variety of educational methods. This may include modified assignments and different instructional strategies. Multiple assessment methods can also be used; formative is key for the paths of each student, and multiple ways to show mastery can be used. Students move at their own pace through the curriculum, with mastery and improvement being the key focus. Students will move on once they show mastery of an objective.
Technology can be a focus of the course. But technology is not required. Making sure students have ownership of their learning and their plans is more important, with the facilitation of learning by the teacher. Honest communication between teacher and student is vital in developing a successful path for each student.
