Rhode Island used many local and national partners and based on successful implementations of personalized learning across the US. The state has created a framework that includes ten characteristics for success using personalized learning.
Differentiating Learning Activities
* Learning activities and interventions are based on individual student needs
Learner Profiles
* Learner profiles based on needs, strengths, and interests are created, and constantly updated.
Mastery-Based Progressions
* Learners move onto next content area or objective when they demonstrate mastery, not based on a time frame. If not successful, learners are given support to reach mastery.
Ongoing Formative Assessments
* Personalized learning has to have current data. Ongoing formative assessments must be current to give student real time feedback and allow them to demonstrate mastery to move to next objective.
Flexible Learning Environment
* Location and time are not set and learning can happen in many different environments. Learners may work independently, in small groups, or in larger group settings throughout the same day.
Student Choice and Agency
* Students given choice about their learning. They may slow down for some objectives and move through others quickly. This choice may include how they demonstrate mastery in an assessment.
Authentic / Applied Learning
* learners will show mastery and also understand how the content connects to different areas of their existing knowledge and how to apply it in different settings. .
Technology Enabled
* Instructors will use technology to monitor learner progression. Learners will use technology for demonstration of mastery.
Teacher Facilitates
* Instructor must select high quality content; design students’ pathways, adapt and intervene based on students’ progress, and support students to develop habits of success
